Dasha Horita is a photographer, graduated with a degree in Communication from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey. She relates that she was 12 years old when her father gave her her old Canon AE1.
“It was a very heavy camera that had not only taken a beating, but had also survived a plunge into the sea. When the camera came into my hands, a new window to see life opened before me.
That was my first discovery. Back then, the only model I had on hand was my younger sister, whom I promised fame at the age of six if she would let me do my hair and makeup as I pleased. Today, when we see those photos, I am surprised by her laughter and she is surprised by her embarrassment.”</ P>

“On a trip to Russia I brought with me an enlarger, as old as Stalin, and with it came my second discovery: I set up a darkroom in my camera and with the smell of chemicals on trays, negatives and blank photographic paper, I came to believe in magic when the images captured by my old Canon were revealed before me.”

“How did I discover that my subject was portraiture? I tried landscaping, but discarded it knowing I was not very contemplative; I photographed architecture, but it felt cold; I tried the abstract, but it didn’t fill me. It was in portraiture that I really felt comfortable because I knew my instinct was always to look for faces. I understand why the “chamulas” don’t allow people to take pictures. They say that “photos steal your soul”, and they are right: a good photograph is what you are looking for, to project your essence.”
